Korea Confirms $22.3 Billion Gas Power Plant in Texas
What happened
Korea confirmed a natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Encinal, Texas. This project is the first under Korea’s $200 billion strategic investment commitment to the United States, and is valued at $22.3 billion. The plant will initially build a 1.4-gigawatt gas turbine facility before expanding to 6.3 gigawatts of generation capacity. Ownership of the project will be split equally between Seoul and Washington.

Why it matters
The project is intended to power artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in the region. The government stated it deemed the project commercially viable, projecting returns of up to $45.4 billion over 20 years under current terms. However, the commercial viability hinges on emerging power purchase agreements with potential electricity buyers.
South Korea is currently evaluating potential investments in a gas project in Texas and an LNG project in Alaska.
