Soaring Beef Prices Drive Food Affordability Concerns in Canada

Due to soaring beef prices, Beb’s Bagels has indefinitely removed its smoke meat sandwich from the menu. Co-owner Lindon Carter reported that beef prices increased from $10 a kilogram three years ago to as high as $17 a kilogram. Concordia University professor Moshe Lander stated that inflation has caused some food prices to double in a generation, while income has not kept pace with these increases.

The situation highlights growing consumer concerns regarding cost of living and food affordability in Canada. Lander noted that while Canadians worry about price increases, there is often insufficient attention paid to income levels. The rising input costs are directly impacting the operational viability of local food businesses.
