Court Capacity Concerns Stall Los Angeles County Jail Reduction Plan

The Los Angeles County Superior Court has expressed significant concerns regarding Los Angeles County’s $2.8 billion plan to reduce its jail population and close Men’s Central Jail without a replacement in the next five years. The court’s executive officer stated that the plan relies heavily on increased court capacity, judicial staffing, and physical space that the court cannot currently accommodate. The court receives only about 77% of the funding it requires, which is strained by rising inflationary and labor costs.

The court’s limitations challenge the feasibility of the county’s major operational plan. The court warned county officials that the proposed actions cannot be implemented at the scale or pace assumed unless the state provides additional money and judges.
