Shipping Industry Explores Ethanol and Methanol for Decarbonization

DNV noted that ethanol is gaining attention in the shipping sector as the industry explores multiple fuel options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ethanol shares characteristics with methanol, potentially offering flexibility for certain vessel applications. Vale has partnered with Shandong Shipping to construct at least two Guaibamax vessels designed to run on ethanol, with delivery expected in 2029. Vale is also evaluating converting methanol-fuelled vessels into tri-fuel ships capable of using methanol, ethanol, and conventional marine fuels.

The exploration of alternative fuels like ethanol and methanol reflects a major industry shift toward decarbonization. Vale stated that designing and constructing new ships is the most cost-effective way to incorporate these technological advances into its decarbonization program. This trend is already being reflected in vessel projects.
