Gainesville Mayor Addresses Local Towing Fees and Company Practices

Mayor Harvey Ward addressed issues concerning local towing companies in Gainesville, noting that a single company handles the majority of nonconsensual tows in the city. The issue centers on fee structures, such as a case involving a $410 invoice for an expired pass. While a company charges the maximum allowed base rate of $160, local ordinances passed in June cap lien fees at $75 after 48 hours and allow for an additional $30 daily storage fee after the first six hours.

The situation highlights a tension between local ordinances and the claims of towing companies regarding fee setting. The company responsible for the tows argues that the fees are set by the state and cannot be changed or modified by the City of Gainesville or any towing company.
