Study commissioned on post-harvest losses in Indian food processing sector
What happened
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries commissioned a study to address post-harvest losses within the food processing sector. A 2022 study, conducted by NABCONS, estimated losses ranging from 6.02 to 15.05 per cent for fruits and 4.87 to 11.61 per cent for vegetables. The report also noted losses of 4.86 per cent for inland fisheries and 8.76 per cent for marine fisheries.
Why it matters
These losses are cited as reducing incomes and raising supply-chain costs across the sector. The study highlighted that structural challenges, such as the high proportion of small agricultural holdings, limit the efficiency of large-load infrastructure like modern packhouses and refrigerated transport.
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is leading the push for food processing sector reforms from its base in New Delhi.
