Vietnam Seafood Industry Faces Seed Shortages and Import Dependence
What happened
A workshop organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment highlighted challenges in Vietnam's seafood industry. The report noted that while shrimp exports are worth about US$4.6 billion, the industry requires 150-160 billion juvenile shrimp annually. Furthermore, domestic production of spiny lobster seed meets only about 10 percent of the annual demand, and green lobster seed is entirely dependent on imports.

Why it matters
The seafood sector accounts for nearly 48 percent of Vietnam's total seafood export value. Dependence on imported broodstock and seed, coupled with technical difficulties in mastering artificial lobster seed production, poses risks to the industry's supply chain and farming efficiency.
The Ministry of Science and Technology is working to drive national competitiveness in Vietnam.
