Morocco Calls for International Code of Conduct for Strait of Gibraltar Management

Morocco's Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita addressed a UN Security Council meeting regarding the management of maritime passages. Bourita stated that Morocco views the management of straits as an international responsibility rather than a property. He called for an international code of conduct for countries bordering these passages and proposed that Morocco host an international forum on the matter.

The Strait of Gibraltar is a vital maritime route, handling approximately 100,000 ships annually. Bourita noted that traffic through the strait is nearly three times more intense than the Strait of Hormuz. Morocco argues that this international responsibility requires cooperation to ensure the waterways remain open, safe, and predictable.
