MRC Pontiac Municipalities Begin Organic Waste Collection Program
What happened
Several municipalities in MRC Pontiac began door-to-door collection of organic waste earlier this year to divert material from landfills. Most municipalities send their collected organics to UTEAU in Litchfield, while Alleyn-et-Cawood and Otter Lake send their waste to a facility in Kazabazua. Over 150 metric tonnes of organic waste have been collected in 2026 so far.

Why it matters
The program allows participating municipalities to pay approximately $120 per tonne for organic waste disposal, which is significantly less than the $280 per tonne cost for garbage, plus a $36 per tonne provincial levy. This shift changes the operational volume and revenue streams for the receiving facilities.
