Mthatha Council Launches Study to Revive Ngangelizwe Township Economy

The OR Tambo District Municipality has initiated a feasibility study into the potential economic revival of Ngangelizwe, one of Mthatha’s oldest townships. The council has set aside R1.5 million this financial year to assess how to transform the residential area into a bustling township economy. The study will investigate improving infrastructure for informal traders and the potential construction of hawker stalls, alongside efforts to revive the township's swimming pool.

The initiative aims to leverage Ngangelizwe's existing size and economic activity to stimulate growth. The study will determine the scale and cost of future interventions needed to achieve this economic revival, comparing potential outcomes against the economic potential of Mdantsane.
