Fraud Investigation into Hennepin County Business Relief Fund Shutdown

A report alleges that officials in Hennepin County, Minnesota, shut down a $2 million relief fund intended for businesses affected by federal immigration enforcement. The fund was established to assist businesses harmed by Operation Metro Surge, which began in December 2025. Of approximately 300 applications received, only 82 were deemed legitimate, leading to the distribution of $500,000 before the program was terminated.

Investigators found that the fraud was extensive, including applications listing non-existent businesses and the use of AI-generated language. Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Lunde stated the fraud reflected a broader breakdown in the application process.
