Odisha Restores University Senates Under Amended State Law

Odisha has amended its university laws, which came into force in April 2025, to restore the university Senate at institutions such as Ravenshaw University and Utkal University. The Senate serves as a key university authority responsible for academics, research, resources, accounts, and financial management. The amended law mandates that the president and secretary of the student union must be included as Senate members.

While the law requires student union leaders to be represented in the Senate, universities are currently employing alternative models. These alternatives include selecting two students from postgraduate departments on merit. This approach balances the need for student representation against concerns regarding historical election-related violence and outside political interference.
