What happened
Indonesia’s Geological Agency deployed a team to investigate a blue fire phenomenon observed near the crater of Mount Papandayan in West Java. Rita Susilawati, head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, stated in Bandung that the glow, first seen on September 23, 2026, weakened and shifted to a whitish-blue color by September 24. The phenomenon is currently interpreted as the natural combustion of sulfur in a solfatara area.
