BIS Mandates Compulsory Registration for Smartphone Screen Protectors in India

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has mandated compulsory registration for smartphone screen protectors manufactured, imported, stored, or sold in India, effective April 1, 2027. This requirement was established by an amendment to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, which now includes screen protectors for smartphones. Following the announcement, Optiemus Infracom shares surged 14.5% on September 22.

The new compulsory registration framework requires conformity with specific standards covering parameters like impact resistance and durability. This regulatory shift is expected to significantly alter the smartphone accessories market in India, which currently consumes over 550 million units.
