Ministry of Power Sets New Fuel Efficiency Targets for Vehicle Fleets in India
What happened
The Ministry of Power notified new fuel-consumption regulations, known as CAFE III, which will be in force until March 31, 2032. These rules require manufacturers to progressively reduce the average fuel consumption of their vehicle fleets. The fleet-average benchmark is set to decline from 3.996 litres per 100 km in 2027-28 to 3.3273 litres per 100 km in 2031-32, representing an improvement of about 16.7%.

Why it matters
The framework tightens fuel-consumption targets while offering incentives for cleaner technologies and ethanol-blended fuels. This policy aims to curb India's oil dependence. Automakers must meet efficiency targets based on the combined performance of their entire vehicle fleet.
The Government of India guides the nation's energy strategy and policy.
