Government Unveils New Schemes to Address Youth Unemployment Crisis

Pat McFadden announced the final recommendations to address the NEET crisis, building on the work of Alan Milburn. The government is expanding its £2.5 billion Job Guarantee scheme and introducing new support for young people aged 18 to 24 who receive health benefits. These young people will be offered a guaranteed job on a voluntary basis three months after their Work Capability Assessment, with support including mentoring, financial, and housing aid. A separate scheme offers £3,000 payments to firms that employ young people on benefits for more than six months.

The new measures involve significant government intervention in the labor market through wage subsidies and job guarantees. The government aims to help 90,000 young people enter work by the end of the current Parliament in 2029. These schemes are designed to help firms take on young people with disabilities or those who are long-term unemployed.
