How it started
What happened
The government announced a targeted petrol relief scheme providing a Rs100-per-litre subsidy on petrol. The program targets owners and users of motorcycles, rickshaws, and other two- and three-wheelers, as well as cars with engine capacities up to 800cc. To benefit, applicants needed to register by sending their CNIC number and vehicle details to 9771 using a SIM registered in their own name.
Why it matters
The scheme represents a significant fiscal intervention by the government to support vulnerable and middle-income segments of society. By subsidizing fuel costs for small commercial vehicles, the government is injecting targeted financial support into the transport sector.
