Port Moody Halts Neighbourhood Energy Utility Plans in Moody Centre
What happened
Port Moody halted plans for a Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) in Moody Centre. The city council voted unanimously on September 29 to cease further work on the proposed utility because a new business case found the financial benefits were currently too small to justify moving forward. The city will continue requiring new constructions in the Moody Centre transit-oriented area to be prepared for a future system.
Why it matters
The NEU was intended to provide district heating to developments in Moody Centre by using heat recovered from a Metro Vancouver sewer main. The decision affects the planned centralized heating infrastructure for the Moody Centre area. Port Moody authorized up to $30,000 from the Green Municipal Fund to create connection guidelines and a service-area bylaw.
