Residents Petition Government Over Road Safety Concerns in Reid, Canberra

Residents in the suburb of Reid petitioned the government regarding serious road safety concerns, including dangerous speeding and inadequate infrastructure planning. The petitioners called for a blanket 40km/h speed limit across the area, along with changes to intersection priority at major streets and increased speed bumps. The Residents' Association formally raised these issues with Tara Cheyne, the ACT City and Government Services Minister, in March. Ms Cheyne responded in May, referring to traffic survey data conducted by the City and Environment Directorate.

The petition focuses on the high volume of commuter traffic utilizing Reid as a cut-through to Civic, leading to average speeds exceeding 60 kilometres an hour in areas with a 50 km/h limit. The government's review of the matter involves evaluating the existing infrastructure against current traffic volumes and safety standards.
