San Antonio City Council Approves $4.4 Billion Budget with Tax Increases

The San Antonio City Council approved a $4.4 billion budget for fiscal year 2027, which is designed to subsidize FY27 and FY28 while managing the city’s projected $158 million deficit. The council passed the budget in a 7-4 vote, which includes a 3.9% property tax increase and cuts to numerous services and nonprofit funding. The new charges require residents to pay 56.288 cents per $100 of taxable property value, with the budget taking effect on October 1.

The approved budget addresses the city's budget gap by increasing the tax burden on property owners. Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones stated that raising property taxes was a 'last resort' to address the financial shortfall. The budget also mandates cuts of $90 million in spending over the next two years.
