SaskEnergy to Conduct Controlled Natural Gas Flaring in Southern Saskatchewan
What happened
SaskEnergy will conduct controlled natural gas flaring at the Bayhurst Compressor Station, located in the Rural Municipality of Chesterfield, about 20 kilometres south of Eatonia. The work is scheduled for September 28, 2026, from 8 to 10 a.m. The controlled burn is required to safely remove natural gas from the infrastructure ahead of planned maintenance. SaskEnergy states that this flaring is standard industry practice and that residential natural gas service in the area is not expected to be affected.
Why it matters
The flaring process involves a portion of the natural gas line being isolated from the system, with gas removed through a temporary 40-foot flare stack. The company notes that this practice reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 85 per cent compared with venting natural gas directly into the atmosphere.
