Siemens tests AI and digital twins at Erlangen factory to boost productivity
What happened
Siemens is currently testing AI tools and digital twins during live production at its factory in Erlangen. Siemens Managing Board member and Digital Industries President Cedrik Neike noted that current factory automation stands at 30% to 40%. The company projects that virtual preparation for new printed circuit board assemblies could require up to 85% less engineering effort and shorten time to market by up to 40%.

Why it matters
The testing is aimed at improving productivity, which is necessary for manufacturers to remain competitive in high-wage countries like Germany. Neike stated that manufacturers require annual productivity gains of 7% to 9%. The use of AI and digital twins is designed to address bottlenecks in quality inspection and increase the factory’s current annual productivity rise of 7%.
Siemens previously announced new AI capabilities at VivaTech 2026.
