Westby School District Proposes Operational Referendum to Exceed Revenue Limits

The Westby Area School District will bring an operational referendum to the ballot in November, as its current referendum expires. If approved, the district would be allowed to exceed state revenue limits by $1.6 million starting in 2027, rising to $1.8 million in year three. Steve Michaels, the superintendent, stated that taxpayers could see lower school tax bills initially because existing debt will be paid off in 2027.

The referendum is intended to help maintain current programs, staffing, and class sizes within the district. Officials noted that if the referendum fails, changes will have to be made, potentially leading to larger class sizes. The proposed funding increase allows the district to operate above state revenue limits.
