Structural Collapse and Migration Accelerate in Uttarakhand's Hill Districts

Structural collapse is driving family migration in high-altitude Almora, Uttarakhand. Since 2000, over 2.26 lakh farming families have migrated from the hill districts of Uttarakhand. The decline is driven by climate stress and crop depredation by wildlife, which accounts for 5.61% of distress migration.

The hill economy in Uttarakhand is experiencing a structural collapse, with only 20% of agricultural land remaining under plough. Climate stress, coupled with small average land holdings and limited minimum support price coverage, creates a significant crop-economics problem that subsidy schemes have not solved.
