Robotic Cleaning Technology Deployed in Santander Ahead of Madrid Trials
What happened
Umibots developed machines that operate independently to reduce manual cleaning and protect marine ecosystems. These robots have been operating on eight of Santander’s 13 beaches since summer 2025, using GPS and laser sensors to collect cigarette butts by filtering the top 10 centimeters of sand. Following this successful deployment, Umibots plans to test modified robots for vegetation clearance and wildfire prevention around Madrid in December and January.
