Suffolk County Reviews Five Businesses for Working Waterfront Preservation Program

Suffolk County is reviewing five specific waterfront businesses for a government-backed initiative aimed at protecting them from overdevelopment. The businesses under review are Hampton Shipyard, Remsenburg Marina, Southold Marine Center, Greenport Yacht & Shipbuilding Co., and La Sala Boatyard. The voluntary program, which is funded by the county, allows property owners to restrict their land use to working waterfront purposes in exchange for a taxpayer-funded payment.

The initiative, called the Working Waterfront Preservation Program, is a $9.5 million effort composed of a 17-member committee. The committee is tasked with analyzing each property's economic significance and whether it qualifies for the financial subsidy from Suffolk County.
