Mayoral Candidate Pledges Full Audit of BRT Network Amid Cost Overruns

The cost of the city’s bus rapid transit (BRT) network has risen to an estimated $454 million, representing a 50 percent increase from original estimates. This cost overrun occurred during the 2024-27 multi-year budget process for the project. The city attributed the increase to rising construction and real estate costs for land acquisitions, as well as pandemic-related supply shocks. Susan Stevenson, a mayoral candidate, pledged a full public accounting of the BRT, a construction plan, and practical improvements to everyday travel.

The BRT network is part of a larger infrastructure project intended to replace aging underground systems in London. Stevenson stated she would initiate the required accounting and construction coordination work within her first 100 days if elected. The candidate also expressed dissatisfaction with the level of detail in the budget and requested an up-to-date review of the proposed northern projects.
