Incident at Aastha Kunj Park Raises Questions Over Delhi's Public Space Management

An alleged gang rape occurred at Aastha Kunj Park, a large green space in southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji area. The incident involved a 17-year-old girl and was allegedly perpetrated by three men posing as police personnel. The park, which spans 142 acres, is managed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). Residents and welfare associations noted that the park was poorly lit in the evenings, and damaged boundary walls made monitoring difficult.

The incident has placed the management and upkeep of large public parks under scrutiny. Concerns have been raised regarding the DDA's operational competence concerning security, adequate lighting, and the management of public assets in Delhi. Residents called for the establishment of neighbourhood park safety committees to assist in upkeep.
