Zimbabwean Finance Minister Defends Government Against Criticism of Economic Management

Mthuli Ncube, the Finance Minister of Zimbabwe, stated that Tendai Biti was 'completely lost' regarding the country's economic situation. Biti, a former finance minister, had criticized the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Ncube on several occasions for the country's economic decline. Biti argued that the Zimbabwean economy was experiencing an unprecedented tailspin, citing a 12.5% contraction in 2019, which he equated to 'depression economics.' Ncube countered by noting that the banking sector held US$1.1 billion in hard US dollars, compared to US$40 million during the national unity government.

The exchange highlights a fundamental divide between the government's economic narrative and that of opposition figures. Biti attributed the economic woes to incompetence and cluelessness of the government, while Ncube defended the administration's policies as being on the right track.
