What happened
The Federal Transit Administration concluded its review of the safety oversight conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. This review, which began in 2022, led to the FTA formally closing its special directive regarding the DPU’s oversight of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The return of direct oversight of the MBTA’s safety equipment and management now rests with the DPU.
