Global Food Security Challenges in Africa Under Scrutiny of Aid Agencies

The Food and Agriculture Organization warned that Africa must achieve significant agricultural shifts to meet a projected 50 percent increase in global food demand by mid-century. The 20th Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali focused on how soil health could be a critical factor in reducing the continent’s annual $50 billion food import bill. Meanwhile, a UN report noted that while global hunger was down in 2025, Africa remained the world’s hunger hotspot, with 309 million people undernourished.

The discussions highlight the pressure on African agricultural systems to become more sustainable and resilient to meet future global food needs. Experts stressed that intentional policy implementation is necessary for African farmers to fully benefit from their land and resources. The findings underscore the ongoing challenges in achieving universal food security on the continent.
