Indian Armed Forces begin phasing out Agniveer recruits
What happened
The Indian Navy began releasing its first batch of Agniveers in mid-November, followed by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army, with the process expected to conclude by December 31, 2026. The first batch included 24,400 Agniveers, and reports indicate that almost 75%, or roughly 18,300, will be released after four years of service. The remaining 25% may be offered enlistment based on performance and service needs.

Why it matters
Under the Agnipath Scheme, Agniveers do not receive regular military pension or gratuity after four years, although they receive a tax-exempt Seva Nidhi package. This policy drives structural changes in defense personnel costs and fiscal planning for the Government of India.
This relates to the short-term recruitment program for the Indian Armed Forces under the Agnipath Scheme.
