What happened
The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh laid foundation stones for two water reservoirs at Barchay and Apati in Sodh tehsil of Kargil on October 17, 2026. These reservoirs, part of Project Him Sarovar, have a combined storage capacity of 60–70 lakh litres. The initiative aims to address water scarcity that has negatively impacted agriculture and rural livelihoods in the area. Authorities were directed to complete the reservoirs by the end of November.
Why it matters
The project is designed to improve water availability for irrigation and households in Kargil. Water scarcity in the region has previously affected agricultural activities and forced some residents to migrate from their villages. The reservoirs are intended to strengthen water security and support agricultural sustainability in Ladakh.
