Longmont Bans Hyperscale Data Centers Within City Limits
What happened
The Longmont City Council has banned the construction of hyperscale data centers within the city limits. The ordinance defines a hyperscale data center as a facility whose projected or contracted peak electrical demand is equal to or greater than 100 megawatts, or 5% of the Platte River Power Authority’s nameplate generating capacity, whichever is lower. The council passed the ban in a 6-1 vote in June.

The measure aims to prevent the largest energy-intensive facilities from locating in Longmont. The ban comes as energy-hungry data centers proliferate across the country to accommodate the growing use of artificial intelligence.
