India Extends Environmental Clearance Validity for Ports and Dredging Projects
What happened
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change extended the validity period of Environmental Clearances (ECs) for ports, harbours, breakwaters, and dredging projects. The period increased from 10 years to 20 years, with provisions allowing for two further extensions of up to five years each. This change was notified through an amendment to the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006.

Why it matters
The amendment aims to enhance the “ease of doing business” and ensure that major infrastructure projects do not stop. The new provision formally includes ports, harbours, breakwaters, and dredging projects alongside mining projects in the EIA validity rules.
