Uganda Ministry of Health Sets New Standards for Community Health Workers
What happened
The Ministry of Health in Uganda released new guidelines on October 15, 2026, aimed at professionalizing community-level healthcare. These standards govern the recruitment, age limits, education requirements, and remuneration for Village Health Teams (VHTs) and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs). Under the guidelines, new VHT recruits must be at least 22 years old and possess basic computer literacy, with a maximum age of 65. For CHEWs, the minimum requirement is completion of Senior Four, and they must be aged between 22 and 35 years.

Why it matters
