NVDA secures alternative water source from Dewas amid drought
What happened
Due to below-normal rainfall influenced by El Niño, the Ujjain Municipal Corporation requested the Narmada Valley Development Authority to provide an alternative water source. Pumping has begun from Dewas, with water expected to reach Ujjain within two days. This water will be mixed with existing reserves at Gambhir Dam before distribution.

Why it matters
The water crisis stems from inadequate rainfall, causing Gambhir Dam to receive only 750 million cubic feet against its 2,250 million cubic feet storage capacity. With the city requiring 8 to 9 million cubic feet daily, existing reserves would last approximately 76 days.
The Narmada Valley Development Authority previously commissioned the Bargi Diversion Project.
