The Reserve Bank of India has granted permission for commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks, local area banks, and regional rural banks to operate branches anywhere in India without prior approval. This expansion is subject to the condition that 25 per cent of such branches must be established in unbanked rural areas. As of July 17, the banking infrastructure comprised over 1.81 lakh bank branches across the country.
