Rocket Lab Electron Launch Scheduled with Rutherford Engine
What happened
Rocket Lab's Electron rocket is scheduled to launch from New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula on September 26, carrying the 13th satellite for Synspective. The mission, dubbed Owlright Owlright Owlright, will place a StriX synthetic aperture radar satellite into a 572-kilometer low Earth orbit. The Electron vehicle utilizes the Rutherford engine, which is the world's first electric pump-fed orbital rocket engine.

Why it matters
The Rutherford engine uses lithium-polymer battery-driven electric motors instead of the industry-standard gas generator. Because its primary components are entirely 3D printed, the engine can be produced in roughly 24 hours, allowing Rocket Lab to maintain a high launch cadence. This capability is central to Electron's business model as a dedicated launch service.
Rocket Lab recently successfully launched satellites for Synspective using its Electron rocket, placing them into orbit above Japan.
