SEBI Adjusts Market Cap Thresholds for Indian Equity Classification
What happened
The Securities and Exchange Board of India is regulating the classification of Indian equities. The thresholds used to define largecap, midcap, and smallcap companies have changed significantly. The cutoff for the smallcap universe, defined by the 250th-ranked company, rose from roughly ₹17,400 crore in June 2023 to about ₹33,500 crore in June 2026, according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India. The largecap cutoff also moved from approximately ₹49,700 crore to roughly ₹1.06 lakh crore.

Why it matters
This movement in the market-cap ladder means that a company that was near the smallcap top in 2023 might still be classified as a smallcap today even if its value nearly doubled. Consequently, genuinely smaller companies are now found further down the market spectrum.
