India's Large Cardamom Exports Decline Amid Crop Failures
The latest in this situation
How it started
What happened
India, which historically supplied nearly 85% of the world’s large cardamom, has seen its annual exports fall significantly from 5,000-6,000 tonnes to around 1,200 tonnes. This decline is attributed to failing plantations in Sikkim. Farmers are observing plants drying up in five to six years, much sooner than the expected 25 to 30 years, and crop losses due to disease mean they harvest only 60-65% of expected production.

Why it matters
The reduced supply from India impacts the availability of large cardamom in major markets, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. As global demand continues to grow, the contraction in supply could increase market prices for imported cardamom in Europe.
