U.S. secures discounted Venezuelan crude oil in secretive deal
What happened
Donald Trump claimed that Venezuela provided the U.S. with 1 million barrels of oil as a gift, predicting that oil prices would drop sharply. This crude oil arrived via a tanker at Port Arthur, where it is being processed at Texas refineries. The oil is part of a secretive U.S. arrangement with Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt and his firm, North American Blue Energy Partners. Under this deal, the U.S. is purchasing roughly 20% of NABEP’s oil at a deep discount and taking 35% ownership of the firm.

Why it matters
The arrangement grants North American Blue Energy Partners rights to a sizable portion of Venezuela’s oil reserves. The U.S. is acquiring discounted crude oil and a stake in the firm, which alters the ownership structure and supply chain related to Venezuelan reserves.
