TVA Converts Hiwassee Dam into Massive Battery Storage Facility
What happened
The Tennessee Valley Authority converted Hiwassee Dam into an enormous battery storage facility. The dam, which was built in 1940 on the Hiwassee River, was retrofitted with a revolutionary pump turbine, Unit 2, in 1956. This unit allows the dam to pump water when electricity demand is low and generate 85 MW of power when demand is high.

Why it matters
This conversion transforms a conventional hydropower dam into a multifunctional energy storage system. The use of reversible pump-turbines enables the facility to store and release energy, which is critical for balancing regional power grids.
Project River is located along the Hiwassee River in Bradley County.
