Water Diversion Dispute Over Sholayar Reservoir Impacts Kerala's Allocation
What happened
Activists from the Chalakudy river protection forum reported that water diversion from Sholayar Reservoir on the Chalakudy River is occurring against the terms of the Parambikulam–Aliyar Project agreement. Under the agreement, Kerala is entitled to an annual allocation of 12,300 million cubic feet from the Sholayar sub-basin. However, activists noted that Kerala received only 180 million cubic metres between July 1 and October 14 of the current water year.

Why it matters
The agreement stipulates that Tamil Nadu is only entitled to divert surplus water remaining after Kerala's full allocation has been provided. Activists expressed concern that the current low supply in the Tamil Nadu Sholayar Reservoir, holding just 37Mm³ as of October 15, makes it unlikely that Kerala will receive the remaining 168Mm³ of its allocated water.
