World Bank Cites Estimates on Annual Turnover of Traditional Markets in Ghana

The World Bank published estimates regarding the traditional markets found across Ghana's 16 administrative regions and 261 districts. These markets function as vibrant, open-air economic hubs for local retail trade, particularly involving food and agricultural produce. Historical estimates cited by the World Bank and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service place the average annual turnover of these traditional markets at approximately US$4 million per location.

These markets are crucial centers for accessing goods and services, often at lower prices. They provide livelihoods for numerous traders, porters, drivers, and support small-scale businesses like farmers and artisans. They also serve as important links in the food and goods distribution chain.
