FAO calls for agricultural system overhaul to meet global food security needs

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stated that achieving food security requires addressing not only food production but also food availability, accessibility, and affordability. FAO is urging countries to reshape agricultural food systems to supply nutritious, healthy, and functional foods. The organization also noted that global food systems are hampered by persistent gender inequality, as women remain central to food production but often face unequal access to resources.

FAO reports that about 673 million people experienced hunger globally in 2024. The organization emphasizes that closing gender gaps in food systems could add nearly one trillion US dollars to the world economy. This underscores the economic necessity of empowering women and girls within global food production.
