Michigan Governor Whitmer expands use of tax-free diesel for farmers and loggers
What happened
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order temporarily expanding when farmers and loggers can use red-dyed diesel for certain highway uses through the end of the year. This fuel, which is the same as clear diesel, costs less because state and federal motor vehicle taxes are not collected on it. The order allows the fuel to be used for activities such as hauling grain or livestock to market.

Why it matters
The change overlaps with the harvest and grain-hauling season. Jonathan LaPorte of Michigan State University Extension estimates that the change could save farmers and loggers about 52 cents per gallon.
