France's Snow Crab Proposal Sparks Dispute Over Canadian Waters
What happened
France is considering issuing an exploratory snow crab license to ASPM Océan SAS, a company based in St. Pierre and Miquelon. President Emmanuel Macron vowed this license could grant up to 1,500 tonnes of snow crab annually for five years. The proposed harvesting area is on the Grand Banks, outside Canada’s 200-nautical mile limit in NAFO area 3NO. Canada opposes the plan, as the waters are controlled by Canada, and Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed disappointment.

Why it matters
The proposal directly challenges Canada's Exclusive Economic Zone and its management of marine resources. Discussions are underway between Global Affairs Canada and Emmanuel Macron regarding the snow crab quotas. This dispute tests Canada's international resource management policies.
