China Unveils Ambitious Five-Year Plan for Biomedical Industry

The Chinese government has introduced a five-year plan aimed at elevating the country's role in global drug innovation. The plan targets a significant shift for the industry, moving it from a primary supplier of active pharmaceutical ingredients to an exporter of innovative drugs. The government stated that the industry must achieve an annual revenue of 3.5tn yuan ($520bn) by 2030, supported by 50 companies earning over $1.5bn annually.

Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the plan sets a goal for China to account for 25% of global first-in-class drugs by 2030. This ambitious push requires a major ramp-up in research and development efforts, leveraging AI and quantum computing in drug discovery.
